Dimensity 7030 Vs. Snapdragon 7s Gen 2

The midrange is no longer Qualcomm's playground as MediaTek has shown a willingness to push them all the way. In this article, we're going to put this notion to the test by putting one of MediaTek's midrange SoCs against one from Qualcomm. This is the Dimensity 7030 vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

MediaTek and Qualcomm are eternal rivals in the midrange segment. Whilst once upon a time, MediaTek trailed behind Qualcomm, they're starting to quickly catch up. In this article, we're going to be comparing two of their SoCs against each other. This is the Dimensity 7030 vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

The Dimensity 7030 is an upper-midrange SoC from MediaTek. It was announced in September of 2023. Whilst the Dimensity 7030 may appear to be a new SoC on the surface, it is a rebranded Dimensity 1050. It has already made its debut on smartphones like the Motorola Edge (2023) and the Motorola Edge 40 Neo.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is itself also a midrange SoC from Qualcomm. It was also announced in the same month as the Dimensity 7030. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, like its opponent here, has not been very popular with smartphone manufacturers. However, you can find it on the Redmi Note 13 Pro.

With this background, let us embark on a comprehensive comparison to determine which SoC is the superior one.

Performance of the Dimensity 7030 vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2

For performance, both SoCs are equipped with a similar setup of ARM Cortex A78 high-performance CPU cores and ARM Cortex A55 battery efficiency CPU cores. Whilst the A78 cores on the Dimensity 7030 are marginally faster at 2.5GHz, there are only two of them. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, on the other hand, may be slightly slower at 2.4GHz, but it packs four high-performance A78 cores. Four cores are more powerful than two cores, thus the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 packs more processing power than the Dimensity 7030.

This is also confirmed by the two leading mobile benchmarks in use today. On AnTuTu, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 outscores the Dimensity 7030 by 100,000 points (609,000 to 500,026) and is 17% better on GeekBench (2967 to 2541).

Gaming of the Dimensity 7030 vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2

Whilst the information on the GPUs used by both SoCs is rather thin, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 holds an advantage. This is because developers optimize their games, apps, and other software to run better on Adreno GPUs. MediaTek on the other hand only tends to optimize its high-end processors.

RAM and Storage

Both SoCs sport the same LPDDR5 RAM running at a maximum speed of 3200MHz. Both SoCs also support a Max of 16GB RAM. On the storage side of things, the Dimensity 7030 boasts support for UFS 2.1 and UFS 3.1. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 supports UFS 2.2 and UFS 3.1. This one is a tie.

Camera and Video

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 takes the lead here with support for up to 200 MP cameras. The Dimensity 7030 on the other hand can support cameras with resolutions of 108MP. On the video side of things, both SoCs can record 4K video at 30fps.

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 also comes equipped with a Qualcomm Spectra ISP and a Hexagon DSP NPU for images and video processing. At this level, the Spectra + Hexagon DSP combo is usually a lot better than offerings from other SoCs.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, both SoCs are tied on a lot of specifications. These include Bluetooth 5.2, WiFi 6, GPS, 4G LTE (Cat. 18) and 5G. The only difference here is that the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 has faster download speeds on 5G.

Battery life

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is built on a more efficient 4nm process. It should offer a bit more battery life and energy efficiency than the Dimensity 7030.

Conclusion

Whilst both SoCs are on par in several areas here, there's no question that the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is the better SoC. This is because it handles performance, gaming, and cameras better. It also should have a better battery life as well. This doesn't mean that the Dimensity 7030 is a bad SoC. Of course not, it's still a very decent SoC. It's just not as good as the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.
