OpenAI's Sora Video Creator to Hit Market Later This Year
In a mid-February unveiling, OpenAI introduced Sora, its cutting-edge generative AI model designed to craft videos from text prompts or static images. Boasting impressive capabilities, Sora can seamlessly edit and extend videos by interpolating frames. While the initial demonstrations left audiences in awe, concrete details regarding a public release remained elusive, with OpenAI only hinting at ongoing expert testing and risk assessments.
However, in a recent interview with OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, exciting news emerged: the release of Sora is imminent, slated for later this year. Murati hinted that the launch could occur within "a few months."
Although specifics regarding the launch date are still pending, this revelation signals a promising step forward, dispelling concerns of a distant rollout. Upon its debut, Sora will empower users to manipulate the videos it generates, albeit initially without accompanying audio. However, audio integration is earmarked for a subsequent release.
Despite its advanced capabilities, Murati acknowledged that operating Sora comes with significant costs compared to other AI models. Nonetheless, OpenAI is committed to offering Sora at a price point comparable to DALL-E, its image generation counterpart. Additionally, prioritizing safety and security, videos produced by Sora will feature watermarks, and the model is poised to refrain from generating content depicting public figures, a measure aimed at mitigating potential misuse.
