Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 vs Dimensity 7200 - The Midrange Heats Up

MediaTek's Dimensity 7200 is shaping to become a real contender in the Midrange market. But can it stand up to the ultimate midrange SoC? Let's find out.

The upper midrange SoC segment is the area where you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get decent performance. For this reason, upper midrange SoCs have become very popular on the market. In this article, we are going to examine two of them: Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 vs Dimensity 7200.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is a relatively new chip from Qualcomm, announced in March of 2023. This SoC is a rebadged variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Even though it is billed as a midrange SoC, its performance is anything but that of a mid-ranger. Our reviews show that this SoC is a bonafide flagship killer.

However, since it is new, it is yet to be adopted by many smartphone makers. With that being said, it has already made its way onto smartphones like the Poco F5, Redmi Note 12 Turbo, and the Realme GT Neo 5 SE.

The Dimensity 7200 on the other hand is also a relatively new SoC from MediaTek although it is a month older than the 7+ Gen 2. It is also billed as a midrange SoC and it is a very decent one.

The Dimensity 7200 has also not enjoyed widespread adoption by many smartphone makers. However, it can be found on phones like the Vivo V27, Vivo iQOO Z7 Pro, Vivo S17e, Vivo T2 Pro 5G, and the Redmi Note 13 Pro+.

Now let's move on to the comparison proper.

Performance of the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 vs Dimensity 7200

Even though both SoCs are billed as midrange SoCs, the 7+ Gen 2 is far superior to the Dimensity 7200 when it comes to performance. This is because the 7+ Gen 2 can call on a Cortex X2 prime core for resource-intensive apps. The Dimensity 7200 on the other hand, has to make do with Cortex A715 CPUs.

Gaming on the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 vs Dimensity 7200

When it comes to gaming, it is the same story. The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is again, far superior to the Dimensity 7200 when it comes to playing mobile games. There is no question about it. The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 uses a far superior Adreno 725 GPU and thus outputs a far better performance.

RAM and Storage

Both SoCs use the same LPDDR5 RAM and support the same UFS 3.1 storage. This one ends as a tie.

Cameras

Both SoC support cameras with a maximum resolution of 200MP which is the expected standard for upper midrange SoCs. However, when it comes to videos, the 7+ Gen can record 4K video at 60fps. The Dimensity 7200 can only do so at a much slower 30fps.

Connectivity

Both SoCs are next-gen and as a result support 5G connectivity in addition to 4G, 3G, and 2G. They also both support WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and an assorted configuration of GPS technologies. The only difference here that sets the Dimensity 7200 apart from the 7+ Gen 2 is that it boasts faster upload and download speeds on a 5G network. This is a bit surprising because it has played second fiddle to the 7+ Gen 2 so far.

Battery life

Both SoCs here are built using a TSMC 4nm cutting-edge process. As a result, they both have similar levels of heating, battery efficiency, and battery consumption.

Conclusion

Even though both SoCs are tagged as midrange SoCs, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is vastly superior to the Dimensity 7200 in nearly every department. The only area where the Dimensity 7200 performs better is with download speeds. With all that has been said, you should probably already know which SoC is better.
