One of the biggest draw backs of the newly launched Tecno Phantom X is the price, though Tecno came up with a means to drop the price to as low as ₦1,299 many still feels that the absence of 5G in a device that is priced above the ₦200,000 is not a good bargain.
Today we will be testing that theory by comparing the Vivo V21 [5G] to the Tecno Phantom X, to see if 5G on a device automatically makes it worth buying in 2021.
We covered the full review of the Tecno Phantom X here,
Let’s talk about the Vivo V21.
The Vivo V21 major selling point is the inclusion of a 5G chipset, as it comes powered by the 7nm Dimensity 800U [5G] from Mediatek.
Brief information about the Dimensity 800U.
This chipset was manufactured using Samsung’s 7nm processing node.
The chipset was launched in 2020 and comes equipped 5G.
That aside, the chipset uses certain older features like UFS 2.2 and max ddr4x support.
The Vivo 21[5G] has some interesting features like 6.44inch FHD amoled display, in-display fingerprint scanner, 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support.
The max storage variant of The V21 is 8/256, but there is a base model of 6/128.
One of the downside of the V21 is the absence of an earphone jack, but an SD expansion slot is available, though you would have to sacrifice the second sim slot.
Lets go over to the comparison: V21 vs Phantom X.
Though both the Phantom X and V21 uses a mediatek chipset, the Phantom X is driven by the older helio G95 built on a 12nm architecture, while the V21 uses the Dimensity 800U which is built on a 7nm architecture.
Phantom X and V21 are fitted with an amoled display from Samsung, both comes equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner, a 90HZ refresh rate.
Where these devices began to differ in display is their sizes, resolution and ppi. The Vivo V21 has a 6.44inch 100.1 cm2 (~84.8% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 1080 x 2400 pixels, 20:9 ratio (~409 ppi density), ordinary AMOLED.
The Phantom X on the other hand has a 6.7inch, 110.2 cm2 (~91.3% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 1080 x 2340 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio (~385 ppi density).
Technically, for media consumption, the Phantom X is the obvious choice, but that is if you are will to ignore the lack of details that will arise from the over-stretched resolution.
So we will leave this round as a tie.
Although the V21 and Phantom X both have the same max storage variant of 8/256GB, only the V21 as an option of 6/128 and the V21 comes with a UFS 2.2 as against the Phantom X 2.1 UFS storage chip.
The clear winner of this round is the V21.
Vivo V21 3 – 1 Phantom X.

Phantom X comes with a 4700mah, USB C charging interface, 33watts charge support, 70% in 30mins [its either Tecno knows something we don’t, or Vivo gave an average charge time for their device]
Tecno wins this round thanks to a faster charge and a 4700mah battery.
Though this is a subject that can be better analysed based on life test. We would have to go with numbers here, our sincere apologies to our readers who may feel disappointed about it, we promise be more realistic in future tests.

AnTuTu Benchmark score.
Neither the Dimensity 800U nor the Helio G95 chipsets are alien techs, so their antutu scores are available. And they are as follows.
Vivo 21 AnTuTu: 336699 (v8), 365055 (v9)
Phantom X AnTuTu: 309055 (v8)
The V21 wins this round.
This is a deciding factor for most smartphone users, though the availability of 5G may sway a few, but not every part of the world which includes Nigeria has 5G Internet service yet.
Vivo V21 retails for ₦203,000, $496.
Phantom X retails for ₦228,000, $555.
The Vivo 21 wins this round.
Drawing the curtain on this comparison leaves me speechless. Though there are some draw backs of the Vivo V21 like the absence of an earphone jack and a smaller 4000mah battery. The presence of 5G and a more affordable pricing when compared to the phantom X makes me wonder if getting the Phantom X is even a choice anyone should consider in 2021.
Conclusively, this comparison ends with a tie between Vivo V21 5 – 5 to the Tecno Phantom X.
Except you are all about the Telephoto lens, build/design and display of the Tecno Phantom X, we would advise you get the Vivo V21 for its better chipset, presence of 5G and cheaper price tag.
