With the codename "Hudson Valley," Microsoft is preparing the release of what may be Windows 12, a new version of the operating system. The next version is supposedly scheduled for release in the second half of 2024 and is intended to completely overhaul the operating system with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI).

The Windows Insider Canary channel is now being used to test early versions of Hudson Valley; the RTM version is expected to be released in April 2024.

The main goal of Hudson Valley is to employ AI to improve user experience. Two important elements are the "advanced co-pilot" Copilot AI assistance and an AI-driven Windows Shell. The goal of this assistant's continuous background operation is to enhance features like search, program launches, workflow management, and context awareness. Deep integration of AI throughout the operating system will necessitate the purchase of new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) hardware for best results. As a result, computers will need much more hardware, which might prevent some of the AI-focused features from working on older systems.

According to IDC's projection, the assembly rate of AI PCs with NPUs is anticipated to increase significantly, reaching 81% by 2027. This suggests that AI is starting to become widely used in the PC industry.

Updates to Windows 11, such as Background Removal in Paint and the Copilot AI upgrade, suggest Microsoft's continued commitment to AI-powered enhancements. Furthermore, it has been stated that a new roadmap for Windows update cycles is being developed.

In addition to the cutting-edge Copilot, Hudson Valley is rumored to launch AI-powered wallpapers with interactive features and dynamic parallax effects; a Super Resolution feature that improves the quality of images in games, videos, and photos; an enhanced energy-saving mode; and possibly a redesign of the desktop interface with the system tray at the top. However, the exact moniker and characteristics of Hudson Valley are still unknown.
