WordPad Retires in Latest Windows 11 Insider Build
WordPad, the enduring text editor embedded in Windows for nearly three decades, is bidding farewell. In the latest Windows 11 Insider build (26020), WordPad has been omitted, and Microsoft plans a complete removal in a forthcoming update.
This change is irreversible, meaning users won't have the option to reinstall WordPad through official channels once the stable build reaches the public. The decision was disclosed on the Windows Insider Blog alongside updates like improved voice access tools and enhanced text-to-speech voices.
The blog post explained, "Starting with this build, the WordPad and People apps will no longer be installed after a clean install of the OS. In a future flight, WordPad will be removed on an upgrade. WordPad will not be reinstallable. WordPad is a deprecated Windows feature."
While not unexpected, this move stands out due to WordPad's long-standing presence and user familiarity. The People app is also on the chopping block, and the Steps Recorder will cease updates, with ClipChamp suggested as a potential substitute.
Notepad, the steadfast text editor, remains in the spotlight with ongoing enhancements. The latest build introduces accessibility tweaks for voice control and the ability to pause and resume printing. Despite these changes, some users may question the continuous adjustments to Notepad.
Among other updates in the new build, users will now receive a notification when their computer is in energy-saving mode, and device naming for easier sharing has been more descriptive.
